Monty Hopkins

Hello MAST Families,                                                                                                                                                                  #4 / 2023-0924

The first two weeks have been a nice gradual build-up into the start of the season, and we are happy to see that attendance has been strong.  It is hoped that your swimmers are enjoying getting to know the new coaches and happy to be back in the pool.

Swimming is a fitness and special skill-based sport and takes a little longer then pickleball to learn the basics.  Humans are meant to be air-breathing, vertical, gravity resistant animals so the adjustment to a breath-limited, horizontal, suspended movement can take a little getting used to.

If you younger swimmer is struggling and maybe even a little frustrated, take heart.  Almost everyone who ever put themselves into competitive swim practices has the same experience.  But, in most cases a transformation occurs (oftentimes quick) as young swimmers see their teammates doing the skills they are trying to learn, and the coaches design drills, teaching progressions and training sets to take advantage of young swimmers natural inclination to learn by doing.

In a sport like swimming where almost everything is unnatural (even for those children labeled “fish” because they love getting in the water) the key is coming to as many practice sessions as possible.  There is an old saying that is definitely true for competitive swimmers:  “Repetition Is The Mother Of Skill.”

We have seen it happen so often.  A swimmer really struggles – sometimes for weeks or months – and then “BAM” they have a huge time improvement or a significant skill change.  Since we are only two weeks into the start of the season, I wanted to remind everyone – including coaches – the keys are to be Persistent, Consistent and Resistant.

Consistent in attending practice and doing what the coaches are asking – “90% of success begins with showing up.”

Persistent in listening, learning, and working hard – “Pound the stone” every day.

Resistant to short-term frustrations and set-backs – temporary failure is often the best teacher.
