WEEKLY UPDATE - Monday, September 4, 2023

Monty Hopkins
Hello MAST Families and Prospective New MAST Families,                                                  #2 / 2023-0904

It is hoped everyone has enjoyed this Labor Day weekend and are getting ready to get back to MAST swimming.
In this update:
  1. New Swimmer Evaluations
  2. Team Registration & USA Swimming registrations
  3. Important upcoming dates
  4. Black 2 & 3 Pre-season “Open” Practice Tue, Sept. 5 & Thr, Sept. 7 6:30 – 7:30 pm
  5. Meet Schedule
  6. Practice Schedule September
  7. Covid (I’m sorry that I have to write those words again)
1) New Swimmer Evaluations

We will offer one more Evaluation session before practices begin on September 11
Evaluations take place from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at Milford High School on September 7
Each Evaluation will take 10-20 minutes.
Each half hour we will offer six openings:  6:30-6:50, 7:00-7:20, 7:30-8:00, 8:00-8:20

Sign up for a New Swimmer Tryout / Evaluation using our Sign-Up Genius Link:

2) Team Membership Registration and USA Swimming Registrations
  • Team Registration: We know that there are continuing problems with the Team Unify software leading to some difficulty in getting your swimmer(s) registered.  However, many new and returning members have been able to register so, please go to the MAST web site and get signed up.
  • SMS: Please enable SMS messaging.  We will not push messages to you except in “emergency” circumstances.  For example, last winter we were informed that Milford was closing due to bad weather (snow), but the decision was made mid-day.  We will post updates on the webpage, but if we could get the message out to your phone that will add a layer of communication that might benefit some.
  • USAS Membership: MAST has chosen to do the mass team registration. Therefore, our registration will return to the $150.00 fee and that will include USAS membership.  Parents will not need to go through the individual registration process.
3) Important Upcoming Dates

Monday, September 11 - First day of MAST practices
Tuesday, September 12 - SwimVille Suit Fitting and Equipment order: 6:30 – 8:30 pm at the pool.
Wednesday, September 13 - MAST Open House in Milford High School Cafeteria at 6:30 pm

4) Pre-season Open Swim Practice for Black 2 & Black 3

We will have the opportunity for the swimmers in Black 2 & Black 3 swimmers to get in the water from 6:30 – 7:30 pm on Tuesday, September 5 and Thursday, September 7.

New Swimmer Evaluations will be offered on Thursday, so the swimmers who choose to attend Pre-season on Thursday will be expected to accommodate the prospective new swimmers who will be doing new swimmer evaluations.

5) Meet Schedule

Among the things we plan to encourage this year is more meet participation for all swimmers.
Please plan to sign up for as many meets as you can in the appropriate competitive divisions.
Ask your coach for guidance.
Meet performance and training are linked together to maximize the competitive swimming experience.
Let’s Race!

7) Covid Update

Once again there is talk of a new strain (or strains) of Covid.  Currently schools and other organizations seem to be business as usual but  cautiously watching trends and medical advice.  We learned a lot during the first covid outbreak a few years ago so the expectation is that futures measures will reflect the lessons learned. Since covid is a virus, it is reasonable to expect that it will be around forever.

If, and until, there are public health measures that we are required to follow, the best practice seems to be using common sense.  If you, your child, any family member, or any close contacts exhibit covid symptoms please keep away from the pool until there are no symptoms.  If in doubt, please consult with your primary care physician.

Swim Video of the week – To get you excited about great swimming.  This  4x100 Medley Relay in the 2016 Rio Olympics features  Michael Phelps last Olympic Race.  It has just about everything you want to see about swimming fast and racing all in this one video!

Have a great week – see you at the pool,

Monty
