WEEKLY UPDATE - Monday, February 6, 2023

Monty Hopkins
Hello MAST Families,                                                                                                                     February 6, 2023

OSI REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP:  If you have not signed your swimmer up for this meet, please do so tonight. Upon occasion we have had parents forget to sign up and ask us to enter their swimmer after the deadline. Unfortunately, when it comes to championship meets, there is no flexibility.  Please don’t miss the deadline.  The cut-off for MAST commitment is tomorrow, February 7.  If there are certain events your swimmer wants to compete in, make sure to add that information to the ”notes” otherwise coaches will select the events that each swimmer is either (a) closest to making an OSI Junior Championship qualifying time, or (b) events that, at practice, the swimmer is starting to show the most improvement or capacity for improvement.

MAST PRACTICE SCHEDULE CHANGE:  We just learned today that the Milford High School Diving team will not be using their normal practice time on this Wednesday and Thursday, and that we have the option of starting our MAST practices an hour earlier. We will start practices earlier on these two days, so please check the updated practice schedule below.  We do not yet know if this will also apply to next week.

ATHLETE PROTECTION POLICIES (MAAPP):  As everyone should know, USASwimming has several policies regarding behavior in any club swimming setting.  Lately there have been a couple incidents that, while most likely innocent, could lead to violations of USAS rules.  If you are not familiar with these rules, please take a few minutes to review them.

Below are a couple links to the USASwimming MAAPP policy FAQ’s:

Of note:

Adults should not enter the change room / locker room when minor athletes are in the change rooms / locker rooms.

No one may use a cell phone in the change room / locker room / bathrooms.

Violation of this rules will result in, at the very minimum, that particular athlete being allowed to use the locker rooms.

SMS MESSAGE SYSTEM (AKA TEXT MESSAGES):  If you have not already done so, please set up your account and your phone to receive text message from MAST.  We will only use the text message feature for emergency or last-minute notices.
Here is a link to help you complete the SMS set-up:

Please use the steps below to add your number and verify it to receive notifications via text:
  1. Log in to Team unify: Click to access the website
  2. Click on "My Account" on the right side of the screen, then "My account" again underneath the drop down
  3. Your information will pop up on the main page. Under the "Account" tab, add your phone number to the "SMS" box, along with your carrier/provider.
  4. Remember to hit save.
  5. Once saved, you will receive a text message from the service to verify your number. You must verify for the process to be completed.
  6. Please note: Text message notification will ONLY be used in last minute practice changes and urgent messages. These are not in place of weekly updates and emails sent to keep you informed on your athlete or the programming for the session.

Let’s have a great week – See you at the pool where we expect to see you swimming fast!

Monty

Swim Video of the Week – Kate Douglass – 2:01.43 American & US Open Record in 200 yd. Breast
Stroke counts by 25 = 4 / 5 / 5 / 5 / 6 / 6 / 6 / 6 That’s really efficient Breaststroke!
Stroke Rates by 25’s (the video was a little jumpy but the best approximation of how Kate swam shows her averaging 1.6 – 1.8 seconds per cycle on the first 100 then 1.7 – 1.5 on the second 100
Turn Times   (avg. hand touch to foot leave) 1.2 seconds
Pullout times  mostly consistent at 4.7 second average even though the distance to breakout decreases slightly on the second 100.
Splits by 50’s 27.71 / 30.38 / 31.53 / 31.31        Splits by 100’s :58.59 / 1:02.84
Notice that after the first 25, almost all her pullouts are to 10 yds., maybe only 9 on the second 100.  That leaves 5 or 6 stroke cycles to complete the remaining 15 yards which means she covers almost 3 yards in one single stroke cycle.
She’s a little long getting to the walls for her turns, but she goes into the turn (and finish) off a complete full stroke cycle every time.
