Weekly Update - Sunday, October 2, 2022

Monty Hopkins
Sunday, October 2, 2022

Hello MAST Families,

Entering Swim Meets:

Please go to the “Events” Page and select the meet you want your swimmer to enter.  Make sure to confirm only the days that the swimmer will attend.  Coaches will select events for their group. Coach Monty will ask for input from Black 2 & Black 3 swimmers to make sure they are entered in the events they want to swim.

Meet Entry Commit Deadlines:
The deadline for our meet on October 14 – 16 is this Tuesday, October 4.
The deadline for the RAYS meet on October 21 – 23 is Tuesday, October 11.

Swimmer Registration – This is a repeat of the message from the MAST Board sent September 26 to all MAST e-mails

Thank you for being a member of the MAST family.   We have an important message to share with you:

In the past, our organization took responsibility for registering our swimmers with USA Swimming.  Membership is required to compete in both practices and swim meets. Historically, we have collected that fee is part of your registration fees with MAST.  Last month, it was brought to our attention that we can no longer register your swimmer on your behalf.  As such we will need your assistance in registering your swimmer with USA Swimming.  We will need you do to the following:

1.  Register or Create a Parent Account for your swimmer. Go to USA Swimming to create your Parent Account at   USA Swimming.  Note if the swimmer is over 16 they will be able to set up their own USA Swimming account. There are instructional videos and articles to guide you through the registration process. Once you create your parent account, you can then register your swimmer.  Go to  hub.usaswimming.org. Complete the forms and you should reach the dashboard.  Once your parent account is created you can add your swimmer.

2.  Register your Swimmer.   To create your swimmer and link to your parent account, start by clicking this link  https://omr.usaswimming.org/omr/welcome/74E04D47B3FF0E.  Complete the registration using your login credentials for your parent account. At the completion of this process, you will receive a member ID for your swimmer.   NOTE:  that you will need to select the  Premium Athlete registration.   The fee is $68.  Once complete, your swimmer will be linked to your account.  You can always copy and paste the swimmer member ID for your swimmer and paste it in the  +family on your parent account. At the completion of the process, your swimmer will now appear on your dashboard and your swimmer will be registered with USA Swimming until 12/31/23.

3.  We issue a  Credit to your Account:  As mentioned, we have previously collected this fee as part of our general registration fee.  We will credit your account and issue refunds.  This is a very manual process, so we beg your patience.  We hope to have this completed within the next few weeks.

4.  Due Date:  If you are a new swimmer please complete this process ASAP.  We apologize for any inconvenience associated with this process.  As parents of swimmers, we are going through the same process.  Please complete this registration by no later than 10/03/22.
If you have an existing USA Swimming account from last year you will not need to complete this process until December of this year as your swimmer’s registration with USA Swimming is valid through 12/31/22.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me with any questions.
Andy Eminger

An update – We were informed by Ohio Swimming on Friday September 30 that the registration process is moving forward, but there may be some delays.  It is hoped that everyone will be registered by the time our meet starts on October 14.  Again, please get signed up ASAP.  Thanks for your patience on this.  Monty

Parent SAFE SPORT Training - Additional Information from USASwimming included at the end of this update.

I expect that all of you are very busy and possibly not thrilled to be asked to take an online course (I “expect” this because I have already heard from a few of you).  I, we, understand this frustration. Please regard this new process as USASwimming getting out in front of a very important issue - safe participation for minor athletes in Swimming.  It will take some extra time on your part to complete the new registration so please be patient. I want to thank our board members for the work they put in to reconcile all the challenges of the migration to the new SWIMS 3.0 platform.

Parent “Safe Sport” Education – A message from USASwimming

From: Elizabeth Hahn < [email protected]>
Date: Tue, Sep 27, 2022, 3:28 PM
Subject: RE: Safe Sport Updates

If the parent took the “Parent’s Guide to Misconduct in Sport” through their hockey (or other sports team) team, then this would be the same training that we ask our parents to take to get credit for their team and Safe Sport Club Recognition.
If they can send us [USASwimming office] a copy of their completion certificate, we [USASwimming] would be happy to give the team credit for their completion. If not, then they would need to take the training again on their own or take our monthly Zoom parent training.

Parent attending Practices

We encourage parents / family members who want to observe swim practice to do so. We ask that you sit in the large bleacher parallel to the pool instead of the smaller set of bleachers at the turn end of the pool (below the record board). Your children will look to you for feedback and/or approval and in doing so will often miss out on communication from the coach.  Thanks for your understanding and support.

Reminder for Dryland Sessions – Swimmers must wear appropriate clothing and footwear for Dryland Sessions.

We appreciate your family being members of the MAST swimming program.

See you at the pool.

Monty

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FROM USASwimming

1. Training and Education:

a. Federal law (the Protecting Young Victims from Sexual Abuse and Safe Sport Authorization Act of 2017) requires USA Swimming to offer and provide consistent training to all adult members who are in regular contact with minor athletes and, subject to parental consent, to members who are minors regarding prevention and reporting of child abuse.

USA Swimming requires all adult members of USA Swimming – both adult athletes and non-athletes - to complete Athlete Protection Training (APT) on an annual basis. This includes:

  • USA Swimming members;
  • Employees or board members of USA Swimming, Zones, Local Swimming Committees (LSCs) or member clubs;
  • Individuals within the governance or disciplinary jurisdiction of USA Swimming, Zones, LSCs or member clubs; and
  • Individuals who are authorized, approved or appointed by USA Swimming, Zones, LSCs or member clubs to have regular contact with or authority over minor athletes.

For more information on the training and education requirements, please review USA Swimming's Training and Education Policy found here. Adult athlete and non-athlete members can access the required training through the Education tab in the new SWIMS database by logging into USA Swimming’s website.

b. USA Swimming offers free training for both parents and minor athletes which can be accessed through the USA Swimming Education tab on a USA Swimming member’s SWIMS account as well as through the LEARN platform. In addition, there are free monthly virtual trainings available to both parents and minor athletes via Zoom. The monthly virtual Zoom training schedule is located here.

c. USA Swimming’s Safe Sport Family Resource Guide is another education tool for our members. This guide encourages parents and guardians to join USA Swimming in creating a positive environment free from abuse.

2. MAAPP

The Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention Policy (MAAPP) is a required policy to be implemented in full by USA Swimming, its Zones, LSCs and member clubs. MAAPP addresses the risk areas of one-on-one interactions, meetings and individual training sessions, electronic communications, in-program travel and lodging, locker rooms and changing areas, as well as massages, rubdowns and athletic training modalities.

The policy aims to strengthen accountability and supervision when it comes to interactions between adults and minors while participating in USA Swimming - all with the goal of preventing abuse. USA Swimming members are required to acknowledge MAAPP every year and there are numerous MAAPP resources available in Spanish to assist our Spanish speaking members.

The full MAAPP can be found at
www.usaswimming.org/maapp, along with educational materials to assist Zones, LSCs and member clubs with implementation.

3. Reporting:

It is every member’s responsibility to promptly report any incident regarding abuse, including sexual misconduct, by a member to USA Swimming. Reporting must occur when an individual has firsthand knowledge of misconduct or where specific and credible information has been received from a victim or knowledgeable third party.

In addition, pursuant to federal law, all adults authorized to interact with minor athletes who learn of facts that give reason to suspect a child has suffered an incident of child abuse, including child sexual abuse, are mandatory reporters and must make a report of the suspected abuse to law enforcement and/or the state's designated agency, as well as to the U.S. Center for SafeSport immediately (e.g., within 24 hours).

  • This reporting requirement is a part of the USA Swimming Code of Conduct Article 306: Child Abuse Reporting Requirements. Various state laws may also require reporting to law enforcement or to a designated child protection agency.
  • Article 307 of the USA Swimming Code of Conduct also states no member shall retaliate against any individual who has made a good faith report. False reporting of sexual misconduct made in bad faith is prohibited, and neither civil nor criminal statutes of limitation apply to reports of cases of sexual abuse. See more about the Whistleblower and Anti-Retaliation Policy here.

Reporting sexual, physical or emotional misconduct can be very difficult. To provide ease in reporting, USA Swimming provides numerous ways in which members can report, which includes the ability to report anonymously.
