Steps to Becoming a Milford H.S. Pool Lifeguard

Monty Hopkins

For anyone interested in helping as a Lifeguard at the Milford HS pool:

If a student lifeguard is willing to "volunteer" guard for MAST practices and not already an MHS aquatic staff, the district policy is that they MUST complete a background check prior to lifeguarding and provide current certifications.  This background check may be completed at the MEVSD administrative office and an appointment must be made prior to getting this completed.  The cost, I believe, is $60.00, however, students may be reimbursed if they get approval from the treasurer's office prior to getting the check completed.

The employment application process takes some time and the student lifeguard would need to complete all of the steps listed below and acquire approval prior to working.  So, if a student is interested in becoming a MHS staff lifeguard, the district employment process takes some time to complete.

If you have student lifeguards that are interested in working for the district, then please have them reach out to me via email.  The steps for an applicant are listed below:

1.  The first step would be for them to reach out to me via email and ask for a meeting/interview so the details of the position and their availability can be discussed.

2.  If after the meeting, it works out that the applicant remains interested in becoming a lifeguard for the district and I think they will be a good fit for the position, then administrative approval must be given to recommend hiring the applicant.

3.  Once approved, the applicant then would contact the district office to acquire the employment paperwork packet and checklist for items needed as part of the employment process (i.e. tax forms, BCI & FBI background checks, work permit, direct deposit etc....)

4.  Once paperwork is completed and the background check results are returned to the district administrative offices, the MEVSD Board of Education then approves the hiring of the applicant at their monthly meeting which is held the third Thursday of every month.

5.  Once the applicant is approved by the B.O.E. and all employment paperwork and background checks are completed, the applicant would setup a meeting with the payroll department to review all of the paperwork and be trained on the Kronos Time System.

After all of the above steps are completed, the lifeguard may then be scheduled to work.  Any minor 16 or 17 years of age must have a permit to work during the school year.  A work permit is not needed for the summer months, however, the district will require a work permit prior to being employed if the applicant will be working during the school year.  This process usually takes several weeks to complete/submit and be approved by the B.O.E.

If you are in need of a lifeguard immediately, I recommend that the lifeguard volunteer his/her time and acquire the required background check by the district.  MAST Board of Trustees would need to compensate the lifeguard if you would like to compensate him/her for his/her time.  As usual, MAST would be charged for the use of any MHS lifeguard that covers MAST practices/meets.

Once again, an appointment must be made to have the background check completed and certifications on file prior to volunteering as a lifeguard.  The results of the background check are usually sent electronically to the district within a week.  Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Thanks.
